Neosporin H Ointment is a combination of three antibiotics (Polymyxin B, Neomycin, Bacitracin) and a steroid (Hydrocortisone). The antibiotics work by different mechanisms to stop bacterial growth on the skin. The steroid works by blocking the release of chemical messengers that make the skin red, swollen and itchy. Together, they treat your skin infection effectively.
Only Neosporin eliminated the infection after 2 applications (at 16 and 24 hours). Both the antibiotic ointment and the wound protectant led to faster wound healing by about 4 days compared with the antiseptics or no treatment.
This medication is a mild corticosteroid.
When to Use Neosporin Neosporin is an over-the-counter (OTC) triple-antibiotic ointment containing three separate antibacterial agents: neomycin, bacitracin, and polymyxin. 2 Triple-antibiotic ointments are commonly used on minor cuts and abrasions to prevent infection and encourage healing.
Ask your healthcare provider before using if you have an open wound, a deep or puncture wound, an animal bite, or a serious burn. If you do not see wound healing after one week, contact your healthcare provider. Do not use bacitracin or Neosporin if you are allergic to the ingredient(s).
Neosporin H Ointment is used as a first aid antibiotic to prevent infections caused by bacteria in minor cuts, scrapes, or burns on your skin. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria, thereby clearing the infection.
Alternatives. Petroleum jelly products, such as Vaseline, can be good alternatives to bacitracin or Neosporin. The jelly keeps wounds from drying out, which can prevent or ease itching and other unpleasant symptoms.
POLYSPORIN® First Aid Antibiotic Ointment is the #1 Dermatologist Recommended First Aid Ointment. It is a double antibiotic, containing Bacitracin and Polymyxin B. It helps prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes and burns. It does not contain Neomycin.
However, other forms of the same antibiotics may be available over the counter (OTC). Some OTC ointments, like Neosporin and Polysporin, are only meant to be used on your skin. Dont use them in your eyes. Theyre not the same as the prescription ointments with the same name that are meant for eye infections.
Keep this medicine in the packet or container it came in, tightly closed. Store it as mentioned on the pack or label. Dispose of the unused medicine. Make sure it is not consumed by pets, children, and other people.
Neosporin H should not be used on the face. Do not use the medication for longer periods of time than you have been advised. Do not apply a bandage or dressing to the area being treated, as this will increase absorption of the preparation and increase the risk of side-effects. This medicine should only be used by the patient, never give it to other people even if their condition appears to be the same.
Follow the directions given by the doctor on the medicine. Apply the medicine to the affected skin areas thinly and in sufficient quantity to cover the affected areas. Neosporin H is usually applied two or three times a day to the affected areas of skin. Wash your hands after using Neosporin H, unless it is used for treating skin infection on the hands.
YES! Neosporin is effective at speeding healing, reducing infection rates, and minimizing scarring, if you are not allergic. Apply a small amount to the injured skin; a thin layer is all that is needed.
No, do not stop taking Neosporin H and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.
A first aid antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin, Neosporin, Polysporin) can be applied to help prevent infection and keep the wound moist. Continued care of the wound is also important. Three times a day, wash the area gently with soap and water, apply an antibiotic ointment, and re-cover with a bandage.
Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Neosporin, makes Neosporin Ophthalmic for use on the eye or eyelid. It is safe to use, but most ophthalmologists believe topical antibiotics do not have much of an effect on styes unless the patient also has blepharitis.
No, do not overuse Neosporin H for long periods or on large areas of skin, than recommended by the doctor. Overusing the medicine can result in too much medicine being absorbed into the body. This may lead to thinning or weakening of the skin and other serious side effects. If you are experiencing increased severity of your symptoms, please consult your doctor for re-evaluation.
Neomycin, an ingredient in Neosporin, is linked with a higher risk of allergic reactions. Still, any of the ingredients in these products can cause an allergic reaction. Both Neosporin and Bacitracin stop bacterial growth, but Neosporin can also kill existing bacteria.
