This medicine belongs to the group of medications called diuretics. It is helpful in treating swelling (edema) in liver disease, heart failure, and kidney patients.
It should be used cautiously by the liver patients; dose adjustment may be required.
It is considered to be safe by the kidney patients; no dose adjustment is required.
There is no information regarding the safety of the medicine when interacted with alcohol.
It may impair driving ability by producing side effects like sleepiness and dizziness.
It is generally considered to be safe by the preganant women.
It is generally considered to be safe by the lactating women; it does not pass through breast milk.
This medicine removes extra water and electrolytes from the body by increasing urine production.
Oedema- it is condition which occurs due to fluid build up in cells, also known as Fluid overload. it can be happenend due to various factors like lifestyles, chest pain, shortness of breast, and arrhythmia.
Adults—At first, 10 or 20 milligrams (mg) once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose as needed. However, the dose is usually not more than 200 mg per day. Children—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.
With IV administration, the onset of action is within 10 mins with a peak in one hour. The duration of action of the drug is around 6 to 8 hours, irrespective of the route of administration. The drug is primarily metabolized by the liver (80%) and excreted in the urine. Half-life elimination is approximately 3.5 hours.
Torsemide works by causing your kidney to excrete more water and electrolytes, including sodium chloride. This helps remove excess fluid, relieving edema. It also lowers your blood pressure.
In hypertensive patients who received 10 mg of Torsemide daily for 6 weeks, the mean increase in blood urea nitrogen was 1.8 mg/dL (0.6 mmol/L), the mean increase in serum creatinine was 0.05 mg/dL (4 mmol/L), and the mean increase in serum uric acid was 1.2 mg/dL (70 mmol/L).
Is torsemide hard on the kidneys? Torsemide should be used very cautiously in patients with renal disease. Hypovolemia, or low fluid volume, caused by diuretic, can be especially dangerous in patients with pre-existing kidney disease.
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, with or without food, usually once daily. It is best to avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of your bedtime to prevent having to get up to urinate. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Patients who received the placebo showed a significantly greater (p < 0.001) mean increase in body weight (3.55 lb) than did patients who remained on torsemide (0.46 lb). Approximately two-thirds of the weight gain observed in the placebo group occurred during the first 3 days after randomization.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
Torsemide (Demadex) is a potent drug that's a diuretic (water pill). This medicine causes a profound increase in urine output (diuresis) by preventing the kidney from retaining water. Specifically, it blocks the reabsorption back into the blood of sodium and water that has been filtered out of the blood by the kidneys.
Torsemide is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Torsemide is used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, or liver disease.
Spironolactone is used to treat certain patients with hyperaldosteronism (the body produces too much aldosterone, a naturally occurring hormone); low potassium levels; heart failure; and in patients with edema (fluid retention) caused by various conditions, including liver, or kidney disease.
