It is an antiviral medication, that is converted to acyclovir in the body. Acyclovir inhibits the replication of herpes viruses, including those causing genital herpes and shingles. Valacyclovir helps manage and prevent herpes outbreaks, reducing the severity and duration of symptoms.
Viral diseases are infections caused by viruses that can cause illnesses such as HIV, Flu, or COVID-19. Viruses can cause harmful symptoms by replicating in host cells.
For most initial herpes outbreaks and cases of recurring herpes, valacyclovir takes effect very quickly and provides some level of relief in as little as two to three days. Generally, the sooner you take valacyclovir after noticing symptoms, the faster it will be to provide relief.
Valcivir reduces the pain and itching caused due to the herpes infection but does not cure it. It helps to heal the sores and prevents the formation of new ones.
Valcivir reduces the chances of passing the infection to your partner, but the possibility of transmission still exists. You should practice safe sex by using condoms. However, you should not have sex if you have genital sores or blisters.
Another potential long-term side effect of valacyclovir usage is HUS/TTP, or hemolytic-uremic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. These similar disorders can lead to the destruction of red blood cells and a low platelet count, preventing your bloods ability to clot.
Since you are elderly and have kidney problem, your doctor will prescribe a low dose of Valcivir. It is very important that you drink plenty of water regularly during the day while taking Valcivir. This will help to reduce the side effects that can affect the kidney or nervous system. Your doctor will closely monitor you for signs of any side effects which may include feeling confused, agitated or unusually sleepy or drowsy. If you develop any of these effects contact your doctor immediately.
The recommended dosage of VALTREX for chronic suppressive therapy of recurrent genital herpes is 1 gram once daily in patients with normal immune function. In patients with a history of 9 or fewer recurrences per year, an alternative dose is 500 mg once daily.
Valcivir is neither an antibiotic nor a corticosteroid. It is an antiviral medicine and acts against viruses. It is effective against herpes simplex virus (chickenpox, cold sores, and genital herpes), varicella zoster virus (shingles), and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Valcivir prevents the occurrence of CMV infection and disease after organ transplant.
Do not use medications containing acyclovir while using valacyclovir.
Valacyclovir (Valtrex): Valacyclovir has been studied in people living with HIV and herpes simplex but not shingles, and is a preferred choice of treatment. It is taken three times a day for 7–10 days. Valacyclovir rarely causes side effects, appears safe to use during pregnancy, and offers better dosing.
Valcivir 1000 Tablet is an antiviral medicine used in the treatment of herpes labialis, genital herpes infection and herpes zoster infections. It prevents the multiplication of virus in human cells and clears up the infection.
Valacyclovir works best if it is used within 48 hours after the first symptoms of shingles or genital herpes (e.g., pain, burning, or blisters) begin to appear. For recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes, valacyclovir works best if it is used within 24 hours after the symptoms begin to appear.
Yes, Valcivir can be given for chicken pox to children aged between 2 years to 18 years. Treatment should be started within 24 hours of appearance of rash for best results. Valcivir should be given for 5 days and as directed by the doctor.
It works by killing or stopping the growth of viruses called herpes simplex (HSV), varicella zoster (VZV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Valaciclovir can be used to: treat shingles (in adults) treat HSV infections of the skin and genital herpes (in adults and adolescents over 12 years old).
Whereas AZT, ribavirin, or ganciclovir were antiproliferative, ddI or acyclovir had little, if any, effect on PBMC mitogenesis. The inhibitory effects of antivirals on immune cells may contribute to the immune deterioration observed in patients following prolonged use of the drugs.
You should immediately contact your doctor or go to a nearby hospital. The symptoms which can be seen if Valcivir is taken in excess include feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, confusion, hallucinations, agitation, decreased consciousness, and coma.
Taking Valcivir if you have advanced HIV infection can increase the risk of developing Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura/Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (TTP/HUS). In TTP/HUS, small blood clots form suddenly throughout the body, which can lead to death. If you experience bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in urine, fits, and bleeding from nose or mouth, you should stop Valcivir and seek emergency medical support and advice.
How is it Treated? There is currently no cure for this virus but outbreaks can be treated or prevented using prescription antiviral medications like acyclovir, famciclovir or valacyclovir.
The standard dose of valacyclovir for suppressive therapy is 1,000 mg taken once daily. People with HSV-1 or HSV-2 that only experience infrequent outbreaks may also be prescribed a lower dose of 500 mg per day.
The duration of Valcivir treatment depends on the disease you are being treated for and whether your immune system is capable of fighting infections or not. For example, if you are taking it for shingles and your immune system works effectively, then you may need to take it for 7 days only. But, if your immunity is compromised, then you may need to take Valcivir for 7 days and for 2 days more after the lesions have dried and healed. Follow your doctor’s recommendations strictly.
