Introduction to Minirin Melt 120mcg Tablet 10s

Minirin melt 120mcg tablets contain the active ingredient desmopressin acetate hydrate. It is used in the treatment of vasopressin-sensitive cranial diabetes insipidus. Vasopressin sensitive means the disease is sensitive to the hormone Vasopressin and  can be treated with Desmopressin. 

It works by causing reabsorption of water from the kidneys which controls excessive thirst and urination in diabetes insipidus. It also helps decrease night-time urine production and bedwetting in children.

Your doctor will decide the dose and how often you should take them. You should use it regularly to get the most benefit from the medicine. Do not stop using the medicine even if you feel better unless the doctor tells you so.

Your doctor may monitor your blood glucose regularly while on treatment with this medicine.

Minirin Melt 120mcg Tablet is a synthetic form of vasopressin (natural hormone that balances water). It works by causing reabsorption of water from the kidneys which controls excessive thirst and urination in diabetes insipidus. It also helps decrease night-time urine production and bedwetting in children. In addition to these, it reduces bleeding episodes by promoting the release of blood clotting factors.

How To Use Minirin Melt 120mcg Tablet 10s

  • Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Minirin Melt 120mcg Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How should Minirin be taken?

Minirin should be taken with small quantity of water, juice or milk. If the child cannot swallow the whole tablet, crush or cut the tablet before giving it to the child. The sublingual tablets or ‘melts’ should be placed below the tongue and then melted tablet should be swallowed.

Does Minirin make you gain weight?

No, Minirin itself does not cause weight gain. Minirin may cause fluid overload which may in turn cause weight gain. Fluid overload is a serious side effect and you should immediately contact your doctor if you experience headache, nausea, vomiting, restlessness, tiredness, loss of appetite, sleepiness, confusion and muscle cramps.

What precautions do I need to take while on Minirin?

Follow all the instructions given by your doctor strictly. Restrict water intake after taking Minirin as drinking too much water can lead to fluid overload, which is a serious side effect. Try not to swallow water while swimming.

Minirin is usually prescribed for 3 months for bedwetting. After 3 months, your doctor will stop the medicine for a week to assess whether your child still needs Minirin or not.
