How does apraclonidine work?

Apraclonidine belongs to a class of drugs called alpha agonists. The exact mechanism for its clinical effects is not clear, however, it is known to act on some naturally occurring substances in the eye muscles and reduce the formation of fluid (aqueous humor) in the eye, thereby lowering the intraocular pressure.

What is it used for?

It is also used as a short-term treatment to delay laser or surgical treatment for glaucoma (a condition characterized by increase in pressure inside the eye causing gradual loss of vision if left untreated) in patients not adequately controlled by similar medications. It is also useful in the diagnosis of Horners syndrome
