It is used to produce conscious sedation (so that you may feel sleepy but not completely asleep) before and during diagnostic, therapeutic, and endoscopic procedures. It is used to sedate patients in intensive care settings. It relieves anxiety and muscle tensions, thus making the person comfortable before investigations or minor surgical or dental procedures.
It works by increasing the action of a chemical messenger (GABA) which suppresses the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain.
