Introduction to Pentasa 2gm Prolonged Release Granules

Pentasa 2gm Prolonged Release Granules is an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat a type of bowel disease known as ulcerative colitis. It helps to reduce symptoms such as diarrhea, bleeding and stomach pain by reducing inflammation in the bowel.

Pentasa 2gm Prolonged Release Granules may also be used to treat another type of bowel disease known as Crohn’s ileocolitis. It should be taken with food. The dose will depend on what you are being treated for but take it exactly as your doctor prescribes. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen.

Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver problems or a blockage in your stomach. Your age may also be a factor in deciding whether this medicine is suitable. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult their doctor before taking this medicine. Let your doctor know about all other medications you are taking as some may affect, or be affected by this medicine.

How Pentasa 2gm Prolonged Release Granules works

Pentasa 2gm Prolonged Release Granules is an aminosalicylate. It works by suppressing the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause inflammation (swelling) in the intestines. This reduces ulceration, bleeding and stomach pain, and prevents future flare-ups of the disease.

How long can you take mesalamine?

What are the side effects of mesalazine?

The most common side effect of Mesalazine/Olsalazine is headache, and this is the main reason why some patients cannot take the drug. Also common are indigestion, nausea and watery diarrhoea, as well as mild allergic reactions such as rash, itchiness and fever.

My symptoms have improved can I stop taking Pentasa?

Continue to take Pentasa as advised by the doctor, even if you feel better at the beginning of your treatment. Do not stop taking Pentasa without consulting your doctor.

Can Pentasa be used for Crohns?

There are two main 5-ASA drugs used in Crohns: Mesalamine (Apriso, Asacol, Delzicol, Lialda, Pentasa) Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine)

How long do Pentasa granules take to work?

It can take up to three weeks after starting 5-ASAs to feel the benefits. You will probably be advised to take 5-ASAs long-term to keep your condition under control and reduce the risk of flare-ups. If you respond well to 5-ASAs you should be able to keep taking them for some years.

Always use Pentasa exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The suppository should be inserted into the back passage (rectum) only. It is intended to be left in place for as long as possible and is therefore best inserted before going to sleep.

How should I use Pentasa?

Remember to drink adequate fluids to remain well hydrated, especially after severe or prolonged episodes of vomiting and/or diarrhea, high fever, or heavy sweating while taking this medicine. Can I drink alcohol while taking Pentasa?

You should avoid alcohol if you have ulcerative colitis, as alcohol will irritate your stomach and intestine which will worsen your condition. Although alcohol does not interfere with the working of Pentasa, you should consult your doctor before taking alcohol.

I am suffering from ulcerative colitis (UC) and piles can I use Pentasa?

Pentasa is used for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, however, you should not start taking the medicine on your own. Consult a doctor who will prescribe you the right dose and duration of treatment and will address any related or other concerns that you have.

Does mesalamine cause weight gain?

Could Asacol be the cause of the weight gain? No, Asacol (mesalamine) is not the cause of your weight gain.

How much Pentasa should I take?

The recommended dosage for the induction of remission and the symptomatic treatment of mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis is 1g (4 PENTASA 250 mg capsules or 2 PENTASA 500 mg capsules) 4 times a day for a total daily dosage of 4g.
