After consumption, the vitamin D supplement alfacalcidol is activated by liver enzymes. Alfacalcidol is further transformed into calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D3, which strengthens bones by raising blood levels of phosphate and calcium.
Your parathyroid glands overproduce their hormone in response to low levels of calcium or vitamin D, a disease known as hyperparathyroidism. This may result in osteoporosis, or weakening of the bones, and a higher risk of fractures. Other issues resulting from insufficient calcium and vitamin D include: Childhood skeletal abnormalities (rickets) in children 6-24 months of age Children's and the elderly's weak muscles (only with vitamin D)
